There is nothing like an immaculate green lawn to enhance the beauty and value of a home. Synthetic lawns, also known as artificial turf or AstroTurf, have been a popular alternative to natural grass lawns in the United States for over 40 years. While athletes and coaches may still debate the pros and cons of playing on artificial turf vs. natural grass, homeowners enjoy many advantages of having a synthetic lawn over a natural one.
The biggest advantages of a properly installed synthetic lawn are minimized upkeep and everlasting beauty. You do not have to periodically mow and water a synthetic lawn and it will not fade, or dry out. Aesthetically, synthetic lawns have come a long way in the last several years. No longer do they have that artificial look and feel to them. It is virtually impossible to tell a synthetic lawn from a perfectly cared for natural grass lawn by sight alone.
There are also advantages to having a synthetic lawn that may not be as easily apparent. For instance, a synthetic lawn will drain much better than natural grass. A synthetic lawn permeable system allows for superior through drainage and no mud puddles will accumulate, even after a heavy rainfall. Pet owners will appreciate the fact that their pet will enjoy the feel of pet grass yet will not be able to dig it up or track mud in the house. The infill used in pet grass is non toxic to animals and the drainage will allow urine to pass through without leaving a stain or odor.
In commercial applications such as sports fields, golf greens and playgrounds synthetic turfs are preferred over natural grass because of a synthetic turf durability and low maintenance. Hi tech water permeable padding underneath the turf is now used to reduce the risk of injuries that were prevalent during the early days of artificial turf. There still may be some purists that prefer natural grass fields, but with the advancements in synthetic turfs today, what athletes play on today is definitely not yesterdays AstroTurf.
